The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Program at Jupiter Elementary School
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Program at Jupiter Elementary School (JES) brings together select FAU Honors College students, as "Bigs", and low income and/or immigrant children from JES, as "Littles". With support from El Sol and Americorps, Dr. Steigenga and Melanie Oates set up a mentoring program in 2016 matching Wilkes Honors College students and alumni with students identified by administrators at JES. Not only do the FAU Honors College students provide these low income and/or immigrant children with a positive role model through their scholarly achievements, but this program also allows these college students to become invaluable resources for each child’s family as a whole. The mentors in this program seek to enhance the chances of success for their Littles at JES by helping them to better their academic, behavioral, and social skills as well as through building the overall capacity of their Little’s family.
